Ikhlas A. Khan

Dr Khan received his B. S. degree in Chemistry and Biology from the Aligarh Muslim University, Aligarh (India) in 1980. He obtained his M. S. in Organic Chemistry in 1982 at the same university. In 1987, he received his Ph.D in Pharmacy under the direction of Prof. H. Wagner at the Institute of Pharmaceutical Biology, Munich ( FRG ). Dr Khan joined the Research Institute of Pharmaceutical Sciences (RIPS) , University of Mississippi as a Postdoctoral Research Associate in 1988. In 1990 he received a postdoctoral position with the Department of Pharmacy at the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology, Zurich (Switzerland). In 1992, he was appointed as a Research Scientist in RIPS, University of Mississippi. He was appointed as Research Assistant Professor in RIPS and received a joint appointment in the Department of Pharmacognosy in 1995. In 2001, he was promoted to Associate Professor of Pharmacognosy and Research Associate Professor in the National Center for Natural Products. In 2002, he was appointed as a Assistant Director of the National center for Natural products Research. In 2005, he was promoted to Professor of Pharmacognosy and Research Professor in the Research Institute of Pharmceutical Sciences. In addition, he also serves in the following capacities:

Research in Progress
Dr. Khan's research interests include the applications of analytical tools in the evaluation of quality and safety of dietary supplements, microbial transformation, fingerprinting and standardization of marker compounds in medicinal plant products, Optimization of large scale extraction and isolation of natural products of commercial value. This includes the search of active components from plants used in folk medicine to understand validity of centuries old use of Herbal Medicine which possess antimicrobial, antitumor, anti-inflammatory or immune modulators properties. The development of analytical methods for the quantitation of marker/standard compounds in dietary supplements by HPLC, GC, and LC/MS, and NMR. These methods will help in determining the validity of claims on dietary supplements. Dr. Khan's group is also actively collaborating with other researchers in areas like genetic fingerprinting, cultivation, environmental contamination of plants used as dietary supplements as well as microbial transformation.
