Department of Pharmaceutics
Educational Programs
The Bachelor of Science in Pharmaceutical Sciences (BSPS) is the undergraduate degree
offered by The University of Mississippi School of Pharmacy. This degree is not a
professional degree and does not entitle one to sit for
the national licensure examination for the practice of
pharmacy. This degree is a prerequisite to entering the
University's Doctor of Pharmacy degree program,
which is the entry-level degree for the practice of
pharmacy. After the third year, students choose from
curricular options available during the fourth year. One
of these options, the clinical track, is a prerequisite for
entering the Doctor of Pharmacy program. Other
options are available which provide a diverse selection of career paths for students who
do not intend to practice pharmacy. These tracks result in the BSPS degree being
awarded with an emphasis in a particular field. One of these tracks is in pharmaceutics.
The department of pharmaceutics participates in the educational mission by offering four
core courses in the curriculum that are taken by all students, regardless of track. If the
student elects to concentrate in pharmaceutics, then additional course work is taken.
The department offers two graduate degrees, the Master of Science and the Doctor of
Philosophy. These programs are constantly evolving in order to meet the needs of
industry and academia. NOTE: A STUDENT MAY ENTER THE PH.D DIRECTLY WITHOUT ENTERING THE MASTER'S PROGRAM
