AAPS – UM STUDENT CHAPTER ACTIVITIES

WE ARE EXTREMELY EXCITED ABOUT OUR PLANS FOR THIS YEAR’S SOUTHERN REGIONAL DISCUSSION GROUP MEETING (SRDG).

AAPS-UM STUDENT CHAPTER IN ASSOCIATION WITH AAPS PRESENTS

PHARMFORUM 2009

May 20-21, 2009

Present Activities: 2008 – till date 

  • Dr.Madhusudan Rao Yamsani, Professor, Pharmaceutical Sciences, Kakatiya University, India visited University of Mississippi on Dec 1-2, 2008. UM-AAPS student chapter had the ipportunity to interact with him. A reception was organized in his honor. He gave a seminar presentation on “Gastroretentive drug delivery systems”. The seminar was attended by students, faculty and scientists from all disciplines in School of Pharmacy.

Past activities for 2007 - 08 

  • The University of Mississippi AAPS Student chapter committee members had general body meetings twice every semester, during the year 2007-2008, to discuss the issues related to the activities, performance, progress and development of the Chapter.
  • As a part of membership drive, UM-AAPS chapter made 10 new members representing Medicinal Chemistry, Pharmacognocy and Pharmaceutical administration departments at the University of Mississippi.
  • Pizza socials were organized in the month of November, 2007 and February 2008 for new and current chapter members.
  •  Dr.E.F.“Gene”Fiese, President AAPS-2007, and Mr. Jeb Harter, Public Outreach Specialist AAPS, visited University of Mississippi on October 25-26, 2007. UM-AAPS student chapter had an opportunity to interact and discuss with them. Welcome reception and lunch organized by the chapter. Dr. Fiese delivered a seminar on “general Pharmaceutics- The New Physical Pharmacy” and Mr. Jeb Harter gave a presentation on “Working together to increase student involvement, visibility of the Association, and awareness of Pharmaceutical sciences”. Barbara Wells, Dean for UM-school of Pharmacy, also met Dr. Fiese.
  • On July 25th 2008,  Dr. Vitthal Kulkarni , Principal research scientist, Research and Development , DPT Laboratories Ltd., San Antonio, Texas, and  Dr. Ji-Seon Kim, Assistant Professor, Department of Pharmaceutical Sciences , University of Tennessee Health science Center  were invited as guest speakers. Dr. Kulkarni spoke on “Liposomes and Lipid Nano-Particles in Topical Drug Delivery Systems” and Dr. Kim delivered a seminar on "Lipid Polymorphs as an Oral Protein Delivery System”. Working Lunch was organized by the chapter where Department of Pharmaceutics faculty, officers and students had a change to interact and have informal discussion with them on scientific and professional development.
  • As part of the SRDG, the UM-AAPS Student Chapter extended its full cooperation in terms of technical and financial inputs for PharmForum–2008 which was organized by University of Arkansans for Medical Sciences, in little rock, AR held in the month of May, 2008.
  • The UM-AAPS student chapter members also actively took part in poster and podium presentations in PharmForum-2008 (May 18-20, University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences, Littlerock, AR) and Sigma Xi Poster Presentation (April 16, 2008, University of Mississippi) and showed their research findings with great enthusiasm.
  • Fall picnic was organized on October 11th, 2008 at Sardis Lake, MS where chapter members and their family had an opportunity to exchange their ideas and involve in recreation activities

Past activities for 2006 - 07 

  • A welcome picnic was organized on November 12, 2006 for the chapter members and their families.
  • The AAPS-University of Mississippi Student chapter committee members had general body meetings twice every semester to discuss the issues related to the activities, performance, progress and development of the Chapter.
  • The Chapter members had the opportunity of listening to two Web Conferences on “High performance liquid chromatography – its selection and developments” one in November 2006 and other in January 2007.
  • Dr. Ho-Wook Jun, Assistant Professor in Department of Biomedical Engineering, University of Alabama at Birmingham, delivered a seminar on “Biomimetic Self-assembled Nanofibers for Nanostructured Tissue Engineering” on April 27, 2007. Dr. Jun’s seminar focused on various critical issues relating to tissue regeneration utilizing nanofibers produced from natural and synthetic polymers. The seminar was followed by a refreshment session where Dr. Jun and students interacted and had an informal discussion on professional development.
  • Dr. Sek Wen Hui, senior biophysicist at Roswell Park Cancer Institute for over 20 years and has worked extensively on drug and gene delivery techniques. Dr. Hui is also an adjunct Professor at State University of NY, Buffalo, delivered a seminar on “Breaking the Barrier: Physical Methods to Deliver Drugs and Genes” on May 3, 2007. Dr. Hui’s seminar focused on transdermal drug delivery system. Sseveral issues related to the drug and gene delivery by breaking the barriers utilizing electroporation technique and liposomal targeting have been addressed. The seminar was followed by a luncheon where Dr. Hui and graduate students interacted and had an informal discussion on scientific and professional development.
  • The Chapter members also had an opportunity to attend a PDD webinar on “Zen and the Art of Pre-formulation Science” in the month of May 2007.
  • As part of the SRDG, the UM Student Chapter extended its full cooperation in terms of technical and financial inputs for PharmForum–2007 which was organized by UT student chapter in Memphis, TN  held on May 30-31, 2007.
  • The UM student chapter members actively took part in poster and podium presentations in PharmForum-2007 and showed their research findings with great enthusiasm.
  • A welcome back picnic was organized on April 1, 2006 where the members had an opportunity to exchange their ideas and also involve in recreation activities.
  • A Social was organized on September 9, 2006 for the chapter members and their families.

Past activities for 2005 - 06 

  • A welcome picnic was organized on November 19, 2005 for the chapter members and their families.
  • The AAPS-Univ of Mississippi Student chapter committee members had general body meetings every month to discuss the progress and come up with new ideas and suggestions.
  • Dr. Edmund Elder, Director of Global Pharmaceutical Development, Dow Chemical Company, delivered a seminar on “Particle Engineering Approaches to Drug Delivery for Enhanced Product Performance” on January 30, 2006. Dr. Elder’s seminar focused on the various critical issues relating to poor solubility of drugs and the particle engineering approaches that can be employed to enhance product performance. The seminar was followed by a Luncheon where Dr. Elder and students engaged in an informal discussion on scientific and professional development.
  • Dr. Edmund Elder also presented a talk to the undergraduate students on the ‘Opportunities for BS and Pharm.D Graduates in Pharmaceutical Industry, Research in Pharmaceutical Sciences and Graduate studies’ on the same day.
  • A welcome back picnic was organized on April 1, 2006 where the members had an opportunity to exchange their ideas and also involve in recreation activities.
  • The Chapter members had the opportunity of listening to two Pharmaceutical Drug Delivery Web Conferences, one in October 2005 and other in September 2006.
  • A Social was organized on September 9, 2006 for the chapter members and their families.
  • The UM Student Chapter attended a meeting held for all members of the SRDG on September 28, 2006 at Tunica County to discuss about PharmForum – 2007.
