PROFESSIONAL EXPERIENCE

2012 - present

Director, Pii Center for Pharmaceutical Technology

2011—present

School of Pharmacy and Research Institute of Pharmaceutical Sciences (RIPS), The University of Mississippi, University, MS

Chair and Professor of Pharmaceutics and Research Professor of RIPS: Research programs focus primarily on the creation and investigation of novel delivery systems including films via hot-melt extrusion technology for transmucosal/transdermal delivery of drugs and mucosal vaccines. Research interests include "trans" systems, including oral transmucosal, transdermal and trans-nail drug delivery systems. Many of these systems are directed toward the delivery of poorly soluble drugs via Hot-Melt Extrusion techniques. Polymeric drug delivery design, including bioadhesive/biomaterial applications, stabilization of conventional and novel drug delivery systems for natural product compounds such as Tetrahydrocannabinol (THC and pro-drugs), in addition to antifungal/antibacterial agents and vaccines, is a continued focus of research. Glaucoma is the second largest cause of blindness and accounts for over 7 million visits to physicians each year and is estimated to cost the U.S. government over $1.5 billion annually. The goal of this research is to chemically modify THC into a hydrophilic prodrug that is readily permeable across the corneal epithelium, following topical instillation. We hypothesize that typical amino acid (AA), dicarboxylic acid (DCA) and AA-AA or AA-DCA combination based THC prodrugs will be significantly more hydrophilic than THC and will enhance transcorneal THC permeation.

      PENDING RESEARCH SUPPORT

Innovative Translational Approaches for Pediatric Oral Dosage Form Development"
Principal Investigator: M.A. Repka Co-Principal Investigator at Research Institution: S. Majumdar
      Agency: Industry Period: 09/11/-02/13
The overall goal of this project is to produce solid oral dosage forms for children that allow the correct dosage to be administered in a convenient manner for the child, the healthcare practitioner and/or the caregiver. A major challenge in pediatrics is the lack of appropriate formulations that have been designed to enhance compliance and ensure accurate dosing. Typically, when pediatric formulations are developed by pharmaceutical companies they are developed in the laboratory with no participation from children. These formulations are designed to merely be acceptable by children, often with a take it or leave it attitude. Our hypothesis is that patient acceptability and compliance will be higher for pediatric dosage forms that have been designed with input from children throughout the development path. Engaging kids to drive design of pediatric dosage forms is a unique and novel strategy that will transform pediatric drug development.
