The principal objective of the NCNPR’s discovery and development program is to identify bioactive natural products from plant, marine or microbial sources that may serve as lead compounds for the development of new pharmaceuticals or agrochemicals. Scientists from NCNPR and the Department of Pharmacognosy collect natural product specimens from around the globe. Samples are also obtained through collaborations with botanical gardens, federal agencies and other universities. Our drug discovery investigations currently emphasize agents that control certain infectious diseases, cancer, or immune disorders.

Agrochemical projects seek to identify lead compounds for the development of environmentally benign and toxicologically safe pest management agents. This program is conducted in collaboration with scientists in the Natural Products Utilization Research Unit of the USDA Agricultural Research Service.
